The Weeknd introduced an unreleased song called Tokyo during his September 19 concert at Belluna Dome in Saitama, Japan, giving fans a new track with a direct connection to one of anime’s most recognizable themes.
During the performance, the song incorporated elements of A Cruel Angel’s Thesis, the opening theme from the 1995 series Neon Genesis Evangelion. Original singer Yoko Takahashi joined The Weeknd onstage for Tokyo and later performed the classic anime theme for the audience.
The concert also included visuals directed by Yoko Taro, the creator known for his work on the NieR video game series. The production blended imagery inspired by Neon Genesis Evangelion and NieR, adding another Japanese pop culture connection to the performance.
The Weeknd later shared footage from the show and acknowledged both Yoko Taro and Yoko Takahashi. Tokyo has not yet received an official release date, leaving its future availability unclear following the live debut.
